On Thursday, state Sen. Jabo Waggoner, R-Vestavia Hills, warned his colleagues in the Alabama Legislature that raising the minimum wage in Birmingham would devastate businesses there, cause hard-working people to lose their jobs and send the regional economy into a slump. "I can promise you employment will go downhill," Waggoner said. And on Thursday, state Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, argued forcefully that hiking the minimum employees would lift families out of poverty and inject new spending into the regional economy.
