A prominent southern congressman made a comment last week about Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ proposal to provide free public college educations to students. Rep. James Clyburn, D-SC, said Sen. Bernie Sanders’ tuition-free college proposal would harm historically black colleges and universities. “[If] you start handing out two years of free college at public institutions, are you ready for all the black, private HBCUs to close down? That’s what’s going to happen,” Clyburn said in an interview. “Think about the consequences of things.” But three academics who study the role and history of HBCUs said the claim is unfounded. In fact, they contend, “Bernie Sanders would establish higher education as a ‘right,’ and bring us back to an era when public colleges and universities were free or virtually free — only this time blacks will be included.” Read more: www.ajc.com/news/news/local-education/does-bernie-sanders-free-college-plan-imperil-blac/nqYwC/

I think Sanders amended his plank by saying traditional black colleges would be encouraged to thrive.
You know, not that it matters much. I think most Sanders supporters consider what Sanders says to be aspirational. Sanders himself said it would take several presidents to do what he wants done, plus cooperation of Congress. Elect Sanders and you will NOT be seeing a quick revolution; that is beyond the power of any president.
No question that the attacks against Sanders are mounting and getting bitter, malicious, and sometimes provably false.
For me, the important thing about Sanders is his consistency and general orientation, his opposition to Wall Street and the oligarchy of wealth in contrast to Obama. But hell, I supported Fred Harris way back when.
The way to attack Sanders is to impugn his character. There is a conservative attack floating around that I haven't been able to pin down other than its originating with something called "The Washington Free Beacon." The attacks include statements that Sanders' family took a lot of money from his campaigns as paid employees. No idea if it's true, and the "Washington Free Beacon" is known for scurrilious attacks on Democrats. I need to reasearch it.
In conjunction with that attack was the accusation that Sanders was paying his interns under the $15/hr he says ought to be minimum wage. True, but Time.com says he is the only presidential candidate that pays interns, $10.10/hr., so that is a patently dumb attack.
