Celebrating Malanka always makes Cheryl Shihinski feel like she’s in a different country. The Dickson City resident was among about 150 people who observed the Julian-calendar New Year’s Eve at the St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church celebration Saturday — a tradition the city’s ethnic community lost for some time until organizers revived it more than a decade ago. Mrs. Shihinski and her husband, Boris, congregants of the St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church who described their heritage as important to their identity, have been attending the event for the past several years. “It’s like I’m in a whole different world for the night,” Mrs. Shihinski said. “It’s so hustled and bustled out there.
