Students in the Boston Public Schools are planning to stage a walkout on Monday to protest budget cuts, officials said Friday. In a letter to parents, BPS officials wrote that “students across the city are using social media to plan a ‘walk-out’ on Monday, March 7, at 11:30 a.m. The ‘walk-out’ is part of a national protest on school budget cuts.” The note asked parents to encourage their children to remain in class. “While we encourage our students to become leaders in their community and advocate for their schools, BPS does not sanction students leaving school without permission during the day,” the message said. “Students who choose to participate will be marked absent from any classes that they miss. If your child does leave school, we will notify you by phone.” The Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, a national coalition protesting cuts in various cities, posted details about the planned action on their website under the headline “Storming in Boston! Support the Thunderclap.” Read more: www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2016/03/04/boston-public-schools-students-planning-walkout-protest-budget-cuts/ntV4Akqd6fzSdGg3phFdLM/story.html
