West Virginia's Senate Education Committee chairman supports removing from a bill the block on implementing the state's new science education standards and amending it to ensure that a panel's possible revisions for math, English language arts and science standards are just recommendations. “I'm trying to craft a bill that could be accepted by the House, passed by the Senate and not vetoed by the governor,” said Sen. Dave Sypolt, R-Preston. The 2016 regular session ends next weekend, although lawmakers could override vetoed bills in the extended budget session. The committee considered the amendment Friday but did not vote on it. Sypolt said he believes all Republican Senate Education members will be behind the amendment. He said he sensed a consensus among the full Senate's GOP membership that there shouldn't be a science standards block, and those standards should instead be reviewed, just like math and English.
