BEAUMONT — Gov. Terry McAuliffe knows how to work a room, even when it’s filled with young men serving criminal sentences in a juvenile justice system he is trying to transform. On Friday, McAuliffe became the first Virginia governor to tour the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center in northern Powhatan County to build support for his efforts to replace the aging youth prison and the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center in Chesterfield County with a community-based system that does a better job of keeping youths from returning to incarceration. “We love you, and we want you to be successful,” the governor told a group of young residents in one of three units at Beaumont that already has been converted to a smaller, more supportive housing model that both the youth and staff praised.
