COLUMBIA — Nitrogen gas could be used to execute death row prisoners if a proposal by two South Carolina senators is approved. Sens. Mike Fair, R-Greenville, and Brad Hutto, D-Orangeburg, proposed using the gas as an alternative to a bill that would keep the names of companies that sell the drugs needed for lethal injections from the public. “It’s carried out as if it were lethal injection,” Fair said of using nitrogen gas. “It’s just breathed in, they go to sleep and then he or she dies.” Hutto said he’s opposed to the death penalty in general, but since state law allows executions, he believes it should be done in the most humane way possible.
