House and Senate budget conferees may have a better idea of their next step toward completing the 2016-17 state budget this morning, following an afternoon meeting of legislative leaders with Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin Monday. “Tomorrow at 11, we’ll know a lot more, I guarantee that,” said House Finance Chairman Eric Nelson, R-Kanawha, conceding he does not know what direction will be taken to resolve the budget impasse. Senate Finance Chairman Mike Hall, R-Putnam, said that during the meeting, Department of Revenue budget analysts requested additional time to prepare a new 2016-17 revenue estimate, revised to exclude tax measures included in Tomblin’s budget but not passed by the Legislature, and to update current tax collections. “We can’t prepare a respectable budget without accurate revenue estimates,” Hall said.
