Revived Focus on Lagging Night Life as Boston Ends Late Transit Service
BOSTON — At 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, after celebrating his roommate’s birthday downtown, Dan Haro, 27, considered the options for crossing the Charles River and getting home to Somerville, north of Boston. With 15 minutes to go before the last of the city’s bars closed, there was not an empty cab to be found. Mr. Haro said the price to use a ride-sharing app, like Uber, was surging — to at least twice the usual price of about $16 — because of demand. But because this was last weekend, he still had one more option: Boston’s transit system. In a pilot project that began about two years ago, the city’s creaky subway system and some bus service have been running late at night, with the last trains leaving downtown about 2 a.m. on weekends. That all ends this weekend. Citing low ridership, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is returning the subway, known as the T, back to its old operating hours Saturday into Sunday, with most last trips again departing before 1 a.m. (It usually resumes after 5 a.m.) Read more: www.nytimes.com/2016/03/18/us/revived-focus-on-lagging-night-life-as-boston-ends-late-transit-service.html
