Cranston police, firefighters unions sue to stop R.I. pension reform lawPROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Cranston police and firefighters unions filed a lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court seeking to block the state’s 2011 pension reform law. The union was one of a few that opted out of a 2015 settlement of a state Superior Court lawsuit that had also sought to block the law, a signature achievement of Governor Raimondo from when she was state general treasurer. The new lawsuit argues that the pension overhaul law violated the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits the government from modifying contracts unilaterally and from taking property without compensation. The lawsuit also seeks to include retired members of the police and firefighters unions, who, the suit says, were not given a chance to opt out of the 2015 settlement.
