LANSING — A ban on those ubiquitous plastic bags from grocery, convenience and other retail stores would be prohibited under legislation introduced in Lansing last week. Several communities, including Muskegon and Washtenaw counties, are considering restrictions on the use of plastic bags. But the proposed legislation would preempt any local ordinances when it comes to regulating the plastic bags, or styrofoam cups, even some other types of disposable containers. Other bills introduced last week in the Legislature, include: changing the language requirements in school curriculum to include computer coding, a 10-bill package that would subject the governor's office and the Legislature to the Freedom of Information Act, and yet another bill on restricting when fireworks can be used. In addition, the Flint water crisis continues to prompt proposed legislation, including four bills dealing with water testing and two nonbinding resolutions that would establish a special election for lieutenant governor if the governor decides to resign his office, moving the lieutenant up to the governor's seat.
