Bill to repeal Nebraska's motorcycle helmet requirement fails to advanceLINCOLN — This year’s effort to repeal Nebraska’s nearly 30-year-old motorcycle helmet requirement failed Thursday, despite what the bill’s sponsor called his attempts to compromise. Debate lasted six hours on first-round consideration of the measure sponsored by State Sen. Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins. During debate, Sen. Bill Kintner of Papillion told Omaha Sen. Bob Hilkemann that his filibustering of the bill could hurt his conservative Republican credentials. Both lawmakers are Republicans. “You will never get ahead as a conservative — if you’re going to be a conservative — you’re never going to get ahead and be a leader in the conservative movement if you are leading the charge to make people submit to government,” Kintner said.
