Senate leaders are proposing increases to parts of the education budget, but their counterparts in the House are skeptical about their math. As the Legislature nears the end of the session, the state’s budget for next year hangs in the balance. House and Senate leaders have different ideas on how to tackle funding amid a revenue shortfall and budget cuts, and House Appropriations Chairman Herb Frierson is unsure about the Senate’s proposed budget for education. The Senate has proposed increasing funding for the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, the formula that dictates how much money school districts should get each year, by $40 million. But the MAEP increase will be coupled with cuts to other parts of the education budget, including slashing about $9 million to administration in the Department of Education.
