Nebraska health insurance policies predating federal law can be extended to end of 2017Nebraska insurance companies can extend pre-Affordable Care Act health insurance policies for another three months, to the end of 2017, although it’s unclear whether they will. On Tuesday the Nebraska Department of Insurance said companies with individual and small-group policies that predate the federal law, also known as Obamacare, can offer the “transitional policies” through Dec. 31, 2017. Iowa’s Division of Insurance still is considering the option. Initially under the federal law, in 2013 all individual and small-group policies were supposed to be converted to new policies that had different coverages, terms and rates. But after a public outcry citing President Barack Obama’s comment that people could “keep your plan” if they were satisfied, the government decided to let insurance companies offer to extend the old policies. Insurance companies generally have continued the policies, although with higher rates.
