House defeats measure that could have shut down GHSCOLUMBIA — A Greenville County lawmaker says a proposal defeated this week in the House that could have shut down the Greenville Health System if it moved forward with its restructuring plans was intended as a message for the hospital system. Rep. Garry Smith, a Simpsonville Republican, led four other Greenville County lawmakers in proposing an amendment as part of the budget. The proposal would require the state Department of Health and Environmental Control to immediately revoke the license of any public health-care operation if its governing board "attempts, votes, contracts, or takes any action to subcontract, lease, sublease, assign, convey or in any manner rid itself of its duties enumerated in state law to operate the political subdivision health care system." The House voted 79-8 to table the amendment. Smith told The Greenville News he did not think the measure would pass.
