CHEYENNE – Before Wednesday’s wintry weather canceled their plans this week, both of the Democratic presidential candidates had planned stops in Wyoming. On its face, such a move may sound counterproductive. After all, Wyoming is among the most ruby red of Republican states. Voters here have not chosen a Democrat for president since Lyndon B. Johnson’s landslide over Barry Goldwater in 1964. But two Wyoming political analysts say the events planned by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vermont, and former President Bill Clinton, on behalf of his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, make perfect sense in the context of the ongoing Democratic primary process. With its small population and relatively low proportion of registered Democrats, Wyoming is among the most meager prizes in the delegate race, contributing just 14 pledged delegates – the least of any state and a far cry from the 475 up for grabs in California.
