LANSING – Some stark differences in spending on state worker issues are brewing between the governor and the two chambers of the Legislature. Early budget bills for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1 show the state House and Senate have agreed to much of Gov. Rick Snyder’s requests related to state employees, but will have to iron out major differences on Michigan State Police recruits, cybersecurity and an ongoing office shuffle before sending a final spending plan to Snyder’s desk. In recent years, the Legislature has sent budgets to Snyder by early summer. Here’s a look at where things stand on budget items of particular interest to civil servants as lawmakers head off to spring break until April 12. DisagreementsTroopers: In his budget proposal last month, Snyder requested $9.5 million for the State Police to run an 85-trooper recruit school. The state Senate’s MSP spending committee, led by state Sen. Mike Nofs, R-Battle Creek, a former MSP post commander, wanted $9.8 million for 100 troopers.
