The state House on Monday voted to study the need for campaign finance reform over the next year after debate in which some argued the need is clear and present. “I’ll tell you, this bill is all about figuring out what we can do sensibly and without all the rhetoric,” said House Elections Chairman Bill Denny, R-Jackson. “Let’s find out what we need to do with campaign finance.” “Why are we waiting?” said Rep. Tom Miles, D-Forest. “The Clarion-Ledger and other press has reported what the problems are … Let’s follow the Senate’s lead … If you want transparency, and you want sunshine, this is your chance. Bring the sunshine in.” The Clarion-Ledger has run an ongoing series, “Public Office/Personal Gain.” It has shown how many Mississippi politicians have taken advantage of lax campaign finance laws and reporting regulations and nonexistent enforcement to line their own pockets and to spend money from special interests and lobbyists in ways that could land them in jail in most other states or on the federal level.
