Though not partisan, local positions such as school board and city and county commission seats have hit the radar of North Dakota Democrats as they aim to rebuild the party. Encouraging progressives to run for those posts is a new part of their ground-up approach to develop strong candidates ready to seek higher offices in future years. Speakers touched on this effort Friday and Saturday at the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Convention at the Bismarck Event Center as the party failed to find anyone to nominate for several statewide positions. Some delegates in attendance said they find the strategy relevant to their aspirations. Lori Furaus, for one, is seeking re-election to the Mandan School Board. She served as a delegate this weekend for District 34, which she also chairs.
