While surrogates for Republican presidential candidates and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz arrived in Fargo this weekend to sway North Dakota’s unpledged GOP delegates, supporters on the other side of the aisle showed up at the Democratic convention in Bismarck to rally support. Volunteers for the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders campaigns chatted with attendees Friday and Saturday during the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Convention at the Bismarck Event Center. They aimed to drum up votes for June 7 when the party holds its caucuses throughout North Dakota, as well as convince the state’s five unbound superdelegates to side with their candidate. Though the Vermont senator lags behind the former secretary of state in pledged delegates, Sanders supporters at the convention maintained a spirited demeanor. They handed out stickers, designed shirts and encouraged people to take selfies with a baseball cap topped by a bird figurine — a nod to a recent Sanders’ rally in Oregon that sparked a trending “#birdiesanders” hashtag on social media when a bird flew up to the candidate during his speech. “From the number of people who came to our booth yesterday, it looked like 80-20, for Bernie,” said Vinod Seth, a Bismarck volunteer for the Sanders campaign.
