Gov. vetoes bill requiring schools to ID sexually explicit materialGov. Terry McAuliffe on Monday vetoed legislation that would have allowed parents to opt out their children from instructional materials identified as “sexually explicit” and required schools to offer academic alternatives. In a statement released with the veto of House Bill 516, McAuliffe said local school boards are most knowledgeable and “best positioned” to decide what instructional materials constitute “appropriate literary and artistic works that will expand students’ horizons and enrich their learning experiences.” “Open communication between parents and teachers is important, and school systems have an obligation to provide age-appropriate material for students,” the governor said. “However, this legislation lacks flexibility and would require the label of ‘sexually explicit’ to apply to an artistic work based on a single scene, without further context,” he added. “Numerous educators, librarians, students and others involved in the teaching process have expressed their concerns about the real-life consequences of this legislation’s requirements.” Read more: www.richmond.com/news/article_23efd27d-0499-5bdb-ae13-fa099de04f35.html
