Ken Paxton hires 2nd religious liberties activist as chief of staffAUSTIN – Hiram Sasser, a top litigator at the conservative nonprofit law firm the Liberty Institute, will serve as Attorney General Ken Paxton’s chief of staff for at least the next 90 days. The announcement, sent in an email to all 4,100 agency employees Tuesday, marks the second time in two months Paxton has filled a top post from the ranks of the Plano-based firm. Paxton hired Jeff Mateer, who was the Liberty Institute’s general counsel, as his top assistant attorney general in March. The job was not publicly posted, but Mateer said Paxton did not break a decades-old state law requiring jobs be advertised because agency heads have discretion to appoint their picks to top-level leadership positions. Mateer replaced Charles “Chip” Roy, a former adviser to Gov. Rick Perry and chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz. Paxton’s chief of staff position has been empty for several months after Bernard L. McNamee left the agency to return to private practice in November. Read more: trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/2016/04/ken-paxton-hires-2nd-religious-liberties-activist-as-chief-of-staff.html/
