Union leaders are calling upon Republican state lawmakers to support a possible override vote of a bill that would send unresolved labor negotiations with state employee unions to binding arbitration. House Bill 580 passed both legislative chambers last month and awaits action by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who opposes the legislation. “We’re asking Republicans to stand with and serve their constituents because that’s who elected them and that’s who they should be responsive to and realize how important a labor contract is,” Jim Dixon, president of the Springfield and Central Illinois Trades and Labor Council, said at a press event Thursday. The union leader was speaking as a part of the Faith Coalition for the Common Good, which called for Rauner and the state legislature to seek peaceful resolution to public employee contract negotiations.
