One of the leading teachers unions in New Mexico blasted the state Public Education Department on Thursday over a special-education analysis that said many districts either overreported or underreported hours for workers such as speech therapists, social workers and audiologists. As a result, National Education Association of New Mexico President Betty Patterson said in a statement, the department appears to be trying “to ‘pull back’ money from school districts.” The department is “once again failing to live up to its political claims about putting students first,” she added. The announcement came a day after the Albuquerque Teachers Federation made similar charges and said it will stage a May 4 “walk-in” at Albuquerque high schools in protest. But Public Education Department officials say it’s too early to tell what sort of effect, if any, the new audit will have on school districts.
