Former congressman Paul Broun's former congressional chief of staff indicted
Former northeast Georgia Republican congressman Paul Broun moved to distance himself Thursday from news his former congressional chief of staff was indicted on charges he misappropriated taxpayer funds while working in Broun’s congressional office. Broun, who represented all or part of Athens during his seven years in the U.S. House of Representatives, is now attempting a political comeback in the race for Georgia’s 9th District House seat. According to media reports, the eight-count federal indictment handed down Wednesday charges 45-year-old David G. Bowser with obstruction of proceedings, theft of government property, concealment of material facts and five counts of making false statements. The charges are in connection with an investigation into the use of Broun’s congressional office funds to pay a consultant for work done on Broun’s successful 2012 re-election bid for his House seat and his unsuccessful 2014 run for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by then-Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss. “All my experience with Mr. Bowser led me to believe he was keenly knowledgeable of the House ethics rules and was diligent in applying those rules to the management of our office,” Broun said in a statement issued Wednesday through his campaign office. “Mr. Bowser and his family are in my prayers.” Read more: onlineathens.com/mobile/2016-04-07/former-congressman-paul-brouns-former-congressional-chief-staff-indicted
