JACKSON – Mississippi’s novice charter school law, first passed in 2013, will be expanded under legislation that appears heading to Gov. Phil Bryant for his signature. The Senate approved Thursday by a narrow 24-21 margin changes to the charter school law that would allow students in C, D and F schools to cross district lines to attend charter schools. There was speculation that the Senate would try to go to conference with the House leadership to garner an even greater charter schools expansion supported by Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, who presides over the Senate, and his Education Committee chair Gray Tollison, R-Oxford. But based on the closeness of Thursday’s debate over the more narrowly tailored expansion, it might have proven difficult to pass out of the Senate legislation providing more concessions to charter schools.
