ROCKY HILL — The day after the state correction commissioner released a memo about looming layoffs at the state's prisons, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy told reporters Friday that as many as 2,000 state workers could eventually lose their jobs.
He revealed that the executive branch has had 360 retirements and 288 vacancies in various departments, meaning that nearly 650 positions are open. Vacancies and retirements will help offset the number of layoffs, officials said.
Malloy declined to provide an exact number of overall layoffs, saying that it was still being determined by his budget team.
"It's well in excess of 1,000," Malloy said after a brief tour of the state laboratory in Rocky Hill. "It could easily be approaching 2,000. Based on the most recent budget document, it could go as far as 4,000, quite frankly. But that's not a number that I'm promoting. I want to be very clear."
