Nursing homes deserve a lot of scrutiny, as they care for vulnerable people who may not be able to speak up when something is wrong or may expose themselves to harm because they can't think clearly. Amid questions of whether homes in Pennsylvania have been scrutinized well enough, state and federal officials are stepping up their efforts to protect seniors. The U.S. Department of Justice announced a few weeks ago that it would be forming an elder justice task force in eastern Pennsylvania, including the Lehigh Valley, "to pursue nursing homes that provide grossly substandard care to their residents." The task force, one of 10 nationwide, will include federal, state and local authorities. That announcement comes as the state auditor general is investigating whether the state Health Department has been doing a good enough job monitoring nursing homes and addressing complaints about them.
