U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, still won’t endorse his fellow Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz. “I just don’t think it’s appropriate for a United States senator to be picking the nominee,” Cornyn told Texas reporters during a recent conference call. “I think it’s the voters and the delegates, and I'm more than happy to support the nominee they choose.” Cornyn said he anticipates a contested GOP convention. And yes, he would support front-runner Donald Trump if he’s the nominee. While Cornyn has been cool to Cruz ever since the younger Texas senator refused to endorse him in the 2014 primary, the Senate majority whip got a “healing” visit of sorts from former U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm. Gramm has endorsed Cruz and is now a top economic adviser to the junior senator as well as a sort of “goodwill ambassador” who is visiting his former congressional colleagues, like Cornyn, not to get endorsements for Cruz but to smooth the way for tax and fiscal policy issues that Cruz supports.
