SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's Supreme Court says the state Republican Party cannot block candidates from winning the GOP nomination if candidates skip the party's caucus and convention system.
The court's ruling Friday upholds part of a 2014 law that allows candidates to skip the caucus and convention system and instead gather signatures to get on the primary ballot.
Supporters say primary elections will allow more voter participation but the Utah Republican Party argues the law goes too far and that the party should decide how it chooses candidates.
Spokeswoman Cindie Quintana said the Utah Republican Party had no immediate comment on the ruling Friday.
