New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas joined 11 other attorneys general in a letter urging U.S. Department of Education Secretary John King to stop recognizing the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) as an accrediting body for private colleges. “Shutting down ACICS will help protect New Mexico students from the indefensible tactics of predatory, for-profit schools who saddle our students with unnecessary debt and in some cases leave them with worthless degrees,” Balderas said in a news release Monday. His office said only about 35 percent of students who enroll in ACICS-accredited colleges graduate from their programs and that ACICS has “failed repeatedly to take action in response to public enforcement actions by state and federal law enforcement.” In New Mexico, ACICS has served as an accrediting body for Brown Mackie College and ITT Technical Institute in Albuquerque. www.santafenewmexican.com/news/briefs/attorney-general-shut-down-college-accreditor/article_aa71bddf-aae1-56ab-8cc0-3a8612624f1b.html
