Louisiana Capitol security project complete -- about $2.4M more than projected, 1 year later than anticipated
The long-delayed, problem-plagued State Capitol security project is finally complete after nearly two years — coming in at nearly $2.4 million more than originally projected. The project, with a final price tag of $6.7 million, was borne out of the Louisiana Legislature’s desire to make the 34-story high-rise that serves as the seat of government and home to the Governor’s Office more secure in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City. It was mostly paid for through the state’s capital outlay fund, which is bonded money used for buildings and other construction improvements. The State Capitol was built under the direction of Gov. Huey Long between 1930 and 1932. Louisiana’s Capitol gets about 113,000 visitors a year, based on data compiled by state staff for the Downtown Development District.
