ST. PAUL — A group of Minnesota parents urged lawmakers Tuesday to ban people from using public facilities that don’t correspond with their birth sex, and a transgender woman countered that she’s not a sexual predator but just wants to use the restroom like anyone else. Republican Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen’s proposal would restrict transgender residents’ use of bathrooms, locker rooms and changing facilities. Supporters and foes of the bill packed the hearing room, with proponents wearing buttons saying “No Boys in Girls’ Bathrooms” as opponents waved signs urging lawmakers to support transgender rights. The Republican-controlled House won’t vote on the measure this year, and it stands little chance in the Senate, where Democrats are in charge. Minnesota is just the latest state where the issue has cropped up as the November election approaches. North Carolina recently passed a similar measure, while South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard vetoed a bill limiting bathroom options for transgender people last month.
