“It raised a lot of eyebrows from a lot of guys,” UND senior pitcher Brett DeGagne said. “I just had the biggest lump in my throat that something bad was going to happen to my program that I’ve given everything to for five years.” DeGagne’s suspicions were accurate, as UND athletic director Brian Faison and senior women’s administrator Daniella Irle told the two teams the university was cutting the programs in order to help balance the school’s budget deficit. Reaction ranged from anger to disappointment. “There were choice words and questions asked,” DeGagne said. “I’m outspoken and the self-proclaimed voice of the team, so I said ‘Why us?’ “The only response I got, which is still disheartening, was that someone had to go. That’s still sitting poorly with me. You have all the things you can say and rationale, but that’s what I got.
