Democratic-NPL Party leaders say the endorsement of three Native American candidates for statewide office as well as multiple legislative candidates is part of the party’s ongoing effort to provide a diverse ticket and representation in state government. Officials said the efforts were a mix of individuals coming forward and a subsequent recruitment of others active within the party. Party delegates endorsed Chase Iron Eyes for U.S. House earlier this month at their state convention. Not having found candidates for multiple statewide offices, an executive committee approved by delegates endorsed two other Native American candidates on Monday: Ruth Buffalo for insurance commissioner and Marlo Hunte-Beaubrun for public service commissioner. The party also has four enrolled tribal members running for legislative seats.
