Lawsuit involving snake in county jail dismissed against Dale sheriff’s officials
Dale County, Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson and Dale County Jail Capt. Ron Nelson have been dismissed as defendants in a federal lawsuit in which a man claimed two former deputies used a snake as a means of torture while he was incarcerated in the Dale County Jail. Court records indicate U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson ruled in favor of a motion to dismiss the county, Olson and Nelson in the case of Trawick Redding Jr. Redding sought $3 million in punitive damages from the officials and the former deputies for what was described as “torture, assault of inmate, cruel and unusual punishment” by means of a yellow Burmese python in August 2013. The two former deputies in the case, Zeneth Glenn and Ryan Mittlebach, remain defendants, though documents indicate both men were terminated from the sheriff’s department after the alleged incident. The county was dismissed with prejudice, meaning the suit against the county cannot be filed again. Because the lawsuit against Olson and Nelson was dismissed “without prejudice,” the lawsuit can potentially be filed again.
