House Democrats on Thursday held a public hearing on education funding and chided the Republican leadership for not doing the same. “The ones governing, or at least pretending to govern, have not been open about discussing the issues,” said Rep. Robert Johnson III, D-Natchez, as he chaired a committee that heard from education advocates and officials about needs for more money in public schools. GOP budget leaders continued to hold closed-door meetings in advance of Saturday’s deadline to agree on a state budget of roughly $6 billion for the coming year. One said he doubts there will be any increased funding for K-12 education, and the state’s adequate education funding formula is likely to be shorted about $200 million. “From what I’ve heard so far, there’s not going to be any increase in (K-12) funding,” said House Education Chairman John Moore, R-Brandon. “I don’t think anybody’s found a $40 million or $50 million pot of money out there.
