JACKSON – Legislation referred to as the last charter school proposal to be taken up during the current four-year term passed the Senate by a narrow 26-24 margin Wednesday and is now pending the signature of Gov. Phil Bryant. The Republican governor, a charter school advocate, is expected to sign into law the proposal that will allow students in C, D and F schools to cross district lines to attend charter schools. Rep. Charles Busby, R-Pascagoula, who has been the House leadership’s charter school point person, said in the House Education Committee when passing the proposal earlier this session “it is the last charter school bill we will see this term.” Passing the proposal in the Senate, the chamber that has been viewed as more charter school friendly, proved to be more difficult than expected.
