PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Burying a rebuilt Route 6 and 10 interchange beneath an earthen cap will likely cost $100 million more than initial estimates, state transportation officials said in a request for federal grant funding this week. The project is expected to cost $595 million, not counting a potential bus rapid transit line with stations, according to a grant application filed Thursday. Earlier estimates based on what it would take to rebuild a traditional elevated expressway placed the 6-10 project pricetag at $500 million. How much the project ultimately costs will depend on how much federal funding the state receives and, as a result, how many decrepit bridges the state attempts to fix. A "reduced" version of the project, stretching from the Tobey Street Bridge, which would be demolished, to the Magnolia Street Bridge would cost $515 million, according to the grant application. The full $595-million project, also starting at Tobey Street, would add the Plainfield Street and Hartford Avenue bridges over Route 6 to the repair list.
