What happened to Charlie Baker in a ballroom of the Marriott Copley was wrong. He shouldn’t have been booed off the stage by LGBT activists. But the governor doesn’t exactly get a free pass on this either. His miscalculation — perhaps all along — is to think that not many constituents care about transgender rights in public spaces. In other words, no harm sitting on the fence. That position came across as politically tone deaf when Baker tried to address more than 1,000 guests who gathered Wednesday for the annual LGBT Executive Networking Night hosted by Boston Spirit magazine. But the biggest casualty of the evening was the debate over transgender rights in public spaces. It never stood a chance. Baker didn’t get an opportunity to learn more about the issue when activists put him an impossible position.
