CONCORD — Residents who want to enter federal buildings after Jan. 1, 2018, without showing a passport will be able to do so under a bill the Senate approved Thursday. The Senate voted 18-4 to approve House Bill 1616 after defeating an attempt to make a Real ID compliant license the standard, and allowing those opposed to opt out. New Hampshire is one of a handful of states in danger of losing its Real ID waiver because it allows citizens to remove their Social Security numbers, copies of their birth certificates and license pictures from the Department of Motor Vehicles database. Under the bill, residents would be able to “opt in” to a federally compliant license where that information is available to the federal government.
