BURLINGTON — The University of Vermont is getting its largest one-time gift from a couple whose total contributions make them the most generous donors in the university’s 225-year history. The gift from Dr. Robert Larner and his wife, Helen, was announced Friday at a meeting of the UVM Foundation’s National Campaign Council. Larner is a 1939 graduate of the university and a 1942 graduate of its medical school. The latest gift of $19.7 million in commercial property and cash brings the couple’s total donations to more than $33 million. Larner, the youngest of seven children of a Burlington roofer, was the only one in his family to go to college. He decided to start giving back after building a successful medical practice in Los Angeles after World War II. www.rutlandherald.com/article/20160416/THISJUSTIN/304169995
