Rep. Evan Jenkins, noting that the drug abuse issue is "critically important," said this week the House of Representatives is poised to take up legislation that will address opioid addiction. The U.S. Senate passed CARA (Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act) in March with a 94-1 vote, and one sponsor, Republican Sen. Rob Portman from Ohio, has complained that the House is wasting valuable time with lives hanging in the balance by drafting their own legislation. Politico reported that Portman said on the Senate floor that the upper chamber had "done the hard part." "Every day we lose about 120 Americans to drug overdoses," he said. "That means that we've lost more than 3,240 Americans since the Senate passed this bill." West Virginia leads the nation in drug overdose deaths, according to a report released last year. With 34 deaths per 100,000 residents, the Mountain State more than doubles the national average in drug overdose deaths, according to a report from the Trust for America's Health non-profit and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
