COLUMBIA — A senator opposed to a bill regulating the transgender use of public bathrooms said Thursday that if it survives a committee vote, he and another senator will move to block it from being considered on the Senate floor, meaning "it's pretty much dead for the year." Sen. Joel Lourie, a Columbia Democrat, made his comments at the start of the second public hearing about the bill, which is scheduled to be considered by the full Senate General Committee, possibly as early as next week. Lourie and Sen. Lee Bright, a Spartanburg County Republican and author of the bill, made up the panel hearing testimony on the legislation. The bill would bar people from using public bathrooms, changing rooms and locker rooms that do not correspond with their biological sex and prevent local governments from passing legislation allowing such use.
