WASHINGTON — Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker were on opposite sides of the debate over President Barack Obama's Iran deal, but both were among those giving the maximum to U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez's legal defense fund during the last three months. Adelson, head of the Las Vegas Sands casino company. and his wife Miriam each contributed $10,000, as did fellow New Jersey Democratic senator Booker through his leadership political action committee. The Adelsons each also contributed $10,000 to Menendez last year, as did Booker through his leadership PAC. In all, Menendez raised $316,031 from January to March to cover expenses stemming from his indictment on federal corruption charges a year ago. He spent $255,493, all but around $20,000 on legal fees. During the same period a year ago, Menendez raised $430,000. His lawyers have asked the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to dismiss the case. They have argued that the senator's intervention on issues of concern to Dr, Salomon Melgen, a West Palm Beach, Fla., ophthalmologist, were legitimate policy questions protected by the Constitution's speech or debate clause, which protects legislative actions.
