Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday said he still wants an Atlantic City takeover bill already passed by the state Senate, but said he’d consider a compromise if the Legislature can reach an agreement. “Eventually, if they have something they want to show me that represents a consensus, I’ll consider it at the time,” Christie told reporters at Union County College in Cranford. “But there’s nothing to me at the moment that changes my view on what we need to do.” There are two competing plans to rescue Atlantic City, which has more than $400 million in total debt and annual budget deficits of $100 million without state aid. The city is running out of money and paying employees monthly. Christie has said he will only sign a bill backed by Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland, and Sen. Jim Whelan, D-Atlantic. That bill would give the state power to sell city assets, remove employees and terminate collective bargaining agreements, among other powers for five years.
