Atlantic City made a $4.25 million payment to its school district on Thursday. The payment, announced Friday by Mayor Don Guardian, is half of what the city owes the school district this month. "We are in constant communication with the school district and they understand our situation," Guardian said in a statement. "The State is fully aware of these actions. We have always made and will continue to make payments to the school district as one of our top priorities.” Education Commissioner David Hespe on Tuesday told the Senate Budget Committee that if the district does not get the property-tax payments due from the city, the schools would have had to close. But School Board President John Devlin said the partial payment is enough to keep the schools open.
