Lawmakers expect budget impacts as oil slump puts 'Texas miracle' on ice
AUSTIN — For years, especially when he was running for president, former Gov. Rick Perry used to brag Texas was the leading job creator in the nation.
And long before succeeding Perry last year, Gov. Greg Abbott also bragged the state was the best place in the U.S. for new businesses and job creation.
“The Texas economic model has led to the best business and job growth in America,” Abbott wrote in a Sept. 13, 2014, article for Texas CEO Magazine.
“Jobs are growing here — in our big cities and small towns,” Abbott said. “In fact, half of Forbes (magazine) top 10 cities for future job growth are in Texas, including Austin, McAllen, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.”
