SEIU Local 775 files grievance against state for unpaid DSHS caregiversLONGVIEW, WASHINGTON -- Longview resident Heath Wemmer works full-time as state caregiver to a disabled person. But lately, he hasn’t been getting regular paychecks. He is falling behind on his bills and rent, and he barely has enough gas money to drive his client to appointments. Like Wemmer, hundreds of contract caregivers statewide have delayed paychecks from March due to glitches in the state Department of Social and Health Services payroll system. The Service Employees International Union Local 775 has filed a class-action grievance against the state on their behalf. DSHS, the state’s largest agency, last month rolled out a new system called Individual ProviderOne that logs work hours. Since then, some caregivers have been facing a slew of problems receiving paychecks.
