Schools that use Indian symbols as their official mascots should make sure they are not derogatory to Native Americans, a governor’s commission examining the issue said Monday. After five months of examining the use of such mascots, the 15-member panel appointed by Gov. John Hickenlooper in October made five recommendations to such schools, but didn’t mandate that they do anything. The commission was created after several legislative attempts to put the kibosh on some of the more offensive names, such as “savages” and “redskins.” The recommendations include eliminating any derogatory or offensive name or image, entering into formal relationship with specific tribes for schools that wish to continue using Indian images, and increasing whatever educational curriculum necessary to improve students’ understanding of the history of Native Americans.
